End your outdoor play with a sweet popsicle treat!
April Fool's Day is almost here. A day our kids look forward to all year! It's the perfect time to get a little silly and pull a few April Fool's pranks on them! Giggles guaranteed. Check out our easy and funny pranks to play on kids, below.
Freeze a bowl of cereal with milk the night before. Laugh when your kids try to stick the spoon in the bowl.
Swap where your children are sleeping (while they're sleeping) so they wake up in a new spot.
Swap the clothes in their drawers with a sibling's, or completely remove (and hide) their clothes from one (or more) drawers.
Line up a household of plush animals so that they're all staring at your child. A bit creepy you ask? Definitely. Will your child think it's hilarious? For sure.
Put a Band-Aid on your forehead. When your child asks what happened, say "nothing" or "I don't know what you're talking about". Wear the bandage all day. Extra points for a bandage printed in cartoons.
Add googly eye stickers to everything in your fridge, your fruit bowl, your potted plants, all the toys in your house (balls, trains, cars, etc).
Place a whoopee cushion under your child's favorite seat. Fart noises never get old.
Stuff tissues in the toes of your kids' shoes so they don't fit.
In one room, turn all the furniture and accessories upside down (e.g. chairs, tables, ottomans, bar stools, pictures, etc.). Pretend it's completely normal.
Cover up the sensor on your television remote.
Download the "Broken Screen Prank App" on your child's iPad. Say, "Well it looks like you broke your iPad yesterday, and all the stores are closed right now. Sorry kid."
Cover a piece of furniture (e.g. your child's dresser or desk) in aluminum foil.
Place bubble wrap under rugs and bath mats.
Serve brown "E"s. Cut a few paper "E"s out of brown construction paper, place them inside a baking dish, and cover with aluminum foil. Tell your kids you made them Brown Es for dessert! Let them open the aluminum foil. (Heard enough crying the last few days? Cover up the disappointment with a real treat.)

New Year's Eve is here! Here's a way to have a little celebration with your children. End 2020 with one hour of kids' glee - meaning, games - on New Year's Eve. Then turn on a movie so adults can hang. Finally, end the celebration by ringing in the New Year with an early kids' countdown. Anytime - noon, 3pm, midnight - works as long as you countdown backwards, make some noise, and yell, "Happy New Year!"
One child is Mr. Fox and stands at one side of the room, with his/her back to the group. The rest of the children (and participating adults) stand at the opposite side of the room and say, “Mr. Fox, Mr. Fox, what time is it?” Mr. Fox replies with a time, such as two o’clock. The children then take two steps toward Mr. Fox. The objective is to touch Mr. Fox before midnight. However, if Mr. Fox says, “Midnight!”, all the children must run back to their side before Mr. Fox turns around and tags them.
Children and adults must cross the room and return while waddling with a balloon between their legs/knees. Practice once and then turn this game into a race or relay.
Pair up children and participating adults. Each "team" must stand back to back, and keep the balloon between their backs without falling, while moving across the room, around a chair/table, and back.
Each child must keep a balloon in the air. First only with one hand. Next only with feet. Last, only with heads. Older children are out for the round if their balloon hits the ground. Play a new song for each round. Try to reach 21 balloon bops each time.
Separate children into two lines and have children sit or lay on the floor. The object of this game is to grab the balloon with only your feet and pass it down the line. Stack a pile of balloons by the first person in each line. This person must pick one balloon up with his feet, pass it over his head/body to the person behind him. That person must "grab" it with her feet, and pass over her head. Continue until all balloons are passed down the line.
Then switch to "Sardines" instead. You, the adult, hides. The children count to twenty-one together and they holler "Ready or Not, Here Comes 2021!" When one child (or ten of them) find you, then they hide with you. Last person searching wins.
Looking for a movie suggestion that works for a span of ages and interests AND has a fun dance-able soundtrack? We love Sing, Trolls, and Shrek.
Place a waste bin halfway across the room. Cut up slips of paper and have each person write down one (or multiple things) that they want to "throw away" with 2020 (or sometime soon in 2021). Crumble up these notes and take turns tossing them into the bin. Shout out "goodbye ____" or "no more________" each time a paper ball makes it into the basket.
Next, have each person write down one or multiple things they want to do, experience, or resume in 2021. Fold all the pieces of paper and place into a bowl. Then take turns reading the slips of paper.
Have all the adults grab balloons. Together, countdown from 21. Drop the balloons on the kids' heads as you shout, "Happy New Year!" Break out the Pop Rocks and toast with your favorite sparkling drink.
Wishing you and your families a brighter new year. It's 2021!
Rock Paper Sprinkles: Igniting kids' imaginative play everyday.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

The kids are out of school and they have fourteen glorious nights of holiday break. Oh, wait, they've been out of school since last March?
Well then, they have fourteen glorious nights of freedom from Zoom. You're probably thinking, "I'm already exhausted." We get it. And we're here to help. Fill your holiday break with experiences - this year at home - that pack a big punch and require minimal planning.
Our kids are obsessed with these family nights, and we are certain that they will quickly become a favorite tradition for your families as well.
Night 14: Relax Night
Get out of the house with your family for Activity Night. Grab a mask and do something/anything eventful outside. Go sledding. Go to an outdoor ropes course. Go cross country skiing. Play street hockey. Go puddle jumping. Visit the zoo. Map out your own scavenger hunt course on bikes. If the weather is terrible or you just don't want to leave your home, do Activity Night inside with one of these imaginative "Boredom Boxes".
Ditch Candy Land, and pick a board game that everyone, even you, will have fun playing. Try one or a few of these favorites: Catan Jr., Scattegories, Blokus, Evolution, Labyrinth, Photosynthesis, Monopoly Jr, or Santorini.
Order take out from your favorite restaurant and enjoy an easy family meal. For an extra twist of fun, have each family member write a restaurant on a piece of paper and draw for the winning restaurant.
On craft night, spend a half hour getting artistic – and for an extra parent bonus, getting messy - together. Paint a picture, mold some clay, or order a We Craft Box for younger kids or a Doodle Crate for older kids.
Watch a new or old movie together at home. Make this night special with treats, popcorns and a stack of every pillow and blanket in the house. A surprise gift can be as simple as wrapped microwave popcorn or popcorn containers.
Give night is a night (or day) that you do something for your community, town or world. This can be as simple as taking a walk and picking up trash. Or donate money to a non-profit or volunteer at a local food bank.
Friends night is the night to connect. How to connect during the pandemic? Here are some ideas for your kids: schedule an outdoor masked playdate for each child or make and leave little festive treat bags on friends' doorsteps. Here are some ideas for you: bundle up and get outside for a socially distanced walk-and-talk or winter-wine-and-space-heater night.
Start this night by ordering books from the library or opening a new gift-wrapped book. Make some hot chocolate, turn on the fire, and cuddle up under blankets on the couch. Read as a family, all independently or out loud.
Party night can be low key or big. Yes, you can party with just your immediate family. Have a family-only sleepover party complete with matching pajamas, breakfast for dinner, a pillow fight, tickle tag, dancing and a movie. Or order a Rock Paper Sprinkles Party for your kids - everything you need to throw a fun, just-because, themed party for one or a few in your house.
Make dinner and dessert prep fun with a bake-off chef night. Write menu options (vegetables, side dishes, main dishes and desserts) on slips of paper for each family member to pick and then choose what to cook. Or have each family member compete over who can make the best cupcake. For a bonus, have everyone wear a fun apron. Gift ideas: princess apron, fairy apron, Darth Baker apron, chef hats, or a retro apron.
Get out every single kid puzzle in your house and decorate the floor with puzzles. Or work on just a few new puzzles like a challenging adult puzzle and age appropriate children puzzles. Our favorite brands are Crocodile Creek, Mud Puppy, and Janod; They all have bright pictures, sturdy pieces, and solid containers to ensure multiple uses.
Go do something active with your family. Take a family walk or bike ride. Have each child plan a ten minute exercise routine at home that then everyone has to do. Make it fun and funny: burpees in the living room, army crawls down the hall, jumps up the stairs, and crab walks around the kitchen table.
Tonight is the night you play like a kid, with your kid. Grab that dinosaur figurine and make it walk, talk and go on an adventure with Princess Elena. If you have older kids, play a video game like Fortnite or go shopping. Gift idea: African Safari playscape.

Day 27: Be a cool cat. Don some cat ears and sunglasses. Use socks on your hands as paws. Draw on whiskers and a nose. Meow when you're hungry. For added fun, try out this Cool Cats Boredom Box.
Day 28: Be a runner. Wear running shoes and pants. Add sweatbands. Throw a hand towel around your shoulder and high knee jog everywhere you go.
Day 29: Be a mummy. Wear all white (or at least a white shirt). Slowly wrap each leg in - don't gasp - toilet paper (if you have enough to spare a roll)! Then wrap your body and arms and forehead. Walk around with your arms out straight! For more mummy approved fun, try this Haunted Halloween Boredom Box.
Day 30: Be a swimmer. Wear goggles on your forehead, a swim shirt or a swimsuit and warm-up pants.

Pick a funny name for your skeleton. Use puns, rhymes, spooky adjectives or real names that have died a slow (or quick) death in popularity. Some of our favorite silly skeletons are Ima Bones, Yura Next, Scully Skeleton, Dead Fred and Murdered Myrtle.
Let your children move, position, dress, and accessorize your bones everyday inside and/or outside your home. Enjoy their excitement and silliness as your pile of bones drinks out of a toilet bowl or hugs five teddy bears.

Got a wall, refrigerator or bulletin board? Then this simple school schedule template is for you. Grab a thin marker and transcribe your kid's schedule. Then, keep your sanity as you reference it throughout the day.
Multiple children at a dining table? Don't want to tape schedules to the wall? Make each child their own table tent schedule. For complex schedules, have a table tent for each day of the week. Stack and rotate tents as the week progresses.
Need a reminder for your children to complete their schoolwork? Print this checklist template every week from now until... that day they don't need it.
School's in session. Get smart. Stay sane. Remember to play.

Too busy to throw a special birthday party or exceptional play date at home or outside? Next time, buy a Rock Paper Sprinkles party, and get your props, costumes, favors, supplies, and fun-focused guide - filled with a story narrative of games - delivered to your door.
Be a different superhero each day or all in the same day.
Day 1: Your children are superheroes today - the flying, extra strong, move through walls type. Buy a cape, or make a cape with a towel and rubber band, and let superhero day commence. Here's how:
1. Superhero Stamina: Make your superheroes run laps inside or outside your home. Add some burpees, jumping jacks and push-ups.
2. Superhero Brains: Superheroes need to use their brains as well as their powers. Time for schoolwork and read-out-loud.
3. Superhero Stealth: Superheroes need to be patient and quiet and move about undetected. Play a game (or twenty) of hide-n-seek. Add the twist that the superheroes can change hiding spots as long as they do not get caught.
For additional fun, purchase a Rock Paper Sprinkles's Superhero Academy Party for a child of one or family of a few, or a Superhero Metropolis Toy Playscape for hours of independent play.
Day 2: Your children are medical heroes - doctors, nurses, EMTs, therapists (or any/all of them!). Grab a mask or make one with paper, rubber bands and tape. Pull out a play doctor kit or your supply of Ace Bandages and Band-Aids. Imaginary play, a few different ways:
1. Hero Medical Care: Have your children play doctor/nurse, and you be the patient, with Band-Aids, cold packs, temperature checks and a massage or two.
2. Hero Triage: Instruct your children to create their own field hospital for all of their stuffed animals and toys. Have them use pillows, blankets, Magna-tiles, or blocks for walls and beds.
3. Hero Transport: Finally, instruct your children to include transportation to the field hospital with boxes and bins, blankets and toy cars used as ambulances.
Day 3: Your children are essential workers in the food chain. Give them aprons and set their imaginations loose with a little direction for their organized play.
1. Food Catch: Designate one child to be the farmer. The rest of the family gets to be chickens. Crazy chickens. You can even make chicken headband with this printable PDF template. Then play tag. If you're caught by the farmer, you become food. Last chicken clucking becomes the next farmer.
2. Food Harvest: Hide a special wrapped treat - such as lollipops or left over Easter candy - around the house or yard for your children to find and collect.
3. Food Sort: Instruct your children to gather fake toy food or real food and create a grocery store. Make a register with paper and pen and a calculator. Use bins, boxes or baskets. Create store signs. No toy food? Make some with paper and markers.
4. Food Sell: One child is the cashier and you (or your other children) are the shoppers.
Day 4: It's first responder day. Dress up your children as firefighters, police officers, and lifeguards. Don't have any costumes? Use red or blue t-shirts and swimsuits instead!
1. Get out the Hose: Throw your children into the backyard, if you have one, and turn on the hose. Tell your child play "firefighter" however they choose. Encourage them to build mud houses and then hose them down when they catch on fire.
2. Make Aluminum Handcuffs: It's time for your children to fight crime. Hand over the aluminum foil and let handcuff making commence. Hide your children's stuffed animals around the house, and then have them find these stuffed criminals, cuff them, and bring them to a laundry bin jail. For added fun, let them find and cuff you.
3. Guard the Bath Water: Throw your children into the tub with bubbles and toys. It's lifeguard time. Their job: to ensure that the toys are social distancing, to prevent drownings, and to rescue any toy swimmers from great white sharks and Corona viruses.
Day 5: Today you get to switch rolls with your children. They get to be you. You get to be them.
1. Dress Switch: Dress like your children and let your children dress as you (on a fancy day). Try heels, ties, belted dresses or work shirts.
2. Roll Play Switch: You act like your children. Your children act like you. Let one child at a time lead the game. Throw in a tantrum or two, some sweetness, and 8,000 questions.
3. Story Telling: Have each child "read" you a few books. For non-readers, have them tell stories based on the pictures in the book.
Thank you to all the superheroes out there, working hard inside and outside the home during this strange time.

For Those Seven Days (or Longer) with Kids at Home
It’s spring break… No longer going anywhere fabulous? Never had fabulous plans? Quarantined at home with kids doing online learning?
We have a sanitized sanity plan for you: something easy-to-do and fun for your kids for that downtime at home. Introduce each activity/day with a written note, blind draw, or gift. Kids will love the anticipation of knowing that something “exciting” is planned for the next day.
Here’s the Plan:
Turn kids into an animal (turkey, dog, kitty) or character (fairy, mermaid, superhero) for the day. Do this with a simple DIY paper headband, purchased accessories or just your imaginations.
Then, engage your little animals or characters in interactive play.
Is your house full of mischievous little beings with penchants for all things that glitter? Great. Throw some green on them, make (or buy) green top hats and turn them into little leprechauns.
Simple Costume: Make this leprechaun headband.
Simpler Costume: Buy a leprechaun hat.
Play: Be a leprechaun with these classic "can't find me" games. Then spend hours making a leprechaun trap. Visit the South Orange County Moms Network for Leprechaun Play on St. Patrick's Day.
Kids feeling cross? Turn them into grumbling groundhogs. To you, a groundhog might be an ugly pest that ruins your lawn. To your kid, it's an "oh-so-cute" small, furry animal. Why pick a groundhog? The groundhog reminds us that winter will end and spring, one day, will come. So, too, will our current crisis. So, like those (not-)so-cute groundhogs, let's burrow down, stay-play, and peep up when all is clear. Chuck. Chuck!
Simple Costume: Make this groundhog headband.
Simpler Costume: Buy this fluffy ears (groundhog) headband.
Play: Be a groundhog with Burrowing Play the Groundhog Way.
Are your kids bouncing off the walls? Channel their hops into frog play. They'll get to jump, hop, leap, and catch things with their tongues. By the end, you'll want to croak... like a frog of course!
Simple Costume: Make this frog headband.
Simpler Costume: Buy this frog headband.
Play: Be a frog with Hippity-Hoppity Play the Frog Way.
Kids are little turkeys at heart. They’re wild. They squawk. They constantly peck at you for food. They can get angry and attack. Why not give them free reign all day (or at least for a 1/2 hour.) Gobble. Gobble.
Simple Costume: Make this turkey headband.
Simpler Costume: Buy this turkey hat.
Play: Be a turkey with these squawkin' games that we shared with the South Orange County Moms Network.
Lighten up the day with some boppin' bunny play.
Simplest: Order a Rock Paper Sprinkles' Bunny Bop Party. It's perfect for a small play date or some sibling fun. Bounce out your energy as you train to be the Easter Bunny! Knees up! High hops! Bunny bops!
It's sea day! Your kid is a mermaid (or shark) and needs to be in the tub. Again. And again. And again.
Simple Costume: Pull out the swimsuits!
Simpler Costume: Leave your kids in their birthday suits.
Play: Throw your child into the bath, not once or twice, but as many times during the day as you feel the need to play! Add toys and bubbles.
Superheroes save the day!
Simple Costume: Fashion a cape out of a blanket and rubber band.
Simpler Costume: Buy this cape.
Play: With your child, set up a superhero training obstacle course. Climb along couches, army crawl under brooms propped on chairs, or slide down the stairs in a sleeping bag. Next, play "tickle monster" while you chase after your silly superhero.
Congratulations, you survived one week at home! Reward yourself with a break and surprise your child with some new toys. Try this Superhero Metropolis Playscape, this African Safari Playscape, or any of our other playscapes for endless hours of play.
